Bottlenose dolphin (year-round) — The inshore resident species. Stocky, uniformly grey, 8–12 ft, groups of 10–30. Seen close to the harbor entrance and surf zone. Frequently surfs vessel bow waves at close range. The species most people recognise from aquariums — encounters with wild bottlenose in their own habitat are noticeably different.
Pacific white-sided dolphin (November–April) — Seasonal visitor from offshore cooler waters. Tricoloured with pale "suspender" streaks, highly acrobatic, often in massive mixed herds with common dolphins. A winter/spring Newport trip can produce both species simultaneously in pods of hundreds.
Risso's dolphin (year-round, peak autumn) — Distinctive heavily scarred adults that become almost entirely white with age. Deep-water squid specialists, typically in smaller groups of 10–30. Less acrobatic than other species but unmistakable at close range.
Newport Whales and Davey's Locker both depart from docks near Balboa Pavilion at the tip of the Balboa Peninsula. Trips run 2 to 2.5 hours with morning and afternoon departures. Naturalists accompany all trips.
Sun protection is essential. High-SPF sunscreen applied before boarding — reflected glare off the water amplifies UV and the ocean breeze masks the heat so you won't feel it burning. Long sleeves strongly recommended for all passengers. On a rigid inflatable, wind chill at speed is significant — windbreaker plus long sleeves. On the Newport Whales catamaran, conditions are slightly more sheltered but UV exposure is the same.
Newport Beach is 14 miles south of Disneyland — about 25 minutes by car on the 55 South. Morning trips depart 8am–10am and return by noon. For families visiting Disneyland, a morning whale and dolphin trip makes a natural half-day alternative.
